Meetings, meetings, and more meetings. As parents and professionals navigating the complex world of special education, we are asked to participate in what seems to be an unlimited number of meetings. At times these gatherings produce increased learning and understanding, helping us to better address the special needs of children and families. At other times, we leave frustrated as our expectations for the time spent are not met. What makes the difference between success and frustration? We often think of IEP facilitation as running a meeting. The most successful IEP meetings occur when facilitators stop thinking of them as isolated meetings, and begin seeing them as part of a system of interrelated learning events. When you shift how you see an IEP, you gain the ability to create opportunities for improved collaboration and agreement reaching throughout the life-cycle of an IEP. In this presentation you will: • Learn about the properties of complex adaptive systems. • Understand the elements of an integrated IEP system. • View an IEP meeting in the context of the IEP Life-Cycle. • Build capacity to support the implementation and maintenance of resources that facilitate collaborative decision-making under the I.D.E.A. • Assess the learning events taking place (or not) in your current IEP system, and gain insight for improving them. • Become more responsive to emergent issues and needs as you facilitate the IEP Life-Cycle.
